Wireshark: Network Protocol Analyzer Tool

March 03 , 2022
What is Wireshark?

Wireshark is the world's foremost and widely-used network protocol analyzer. It lets you see what's happening on your network at a microscopic level and is the de facto (and often de jure) standard across many commercial and non-profit enterprises, government agencies, and educational institutions. Wireshark development thrives thanks to the volunteer contributions of networking experts around the globe and is the continuation of a project started by Gerald Combs in 1998. It has been a necessary and vital debugging tool for Tonmind IP Speaker, IP Audio Devices.

Wireshark has a rich feature set which includes the following.

• Deep inspection of hundreds of protocols, with more being added all the time

•Live capture and offline analysis
•Standard three-pane packet browser
•Multi-platform: Runs on Windows, Linux, macOS, Solaris, FreeBSD, NetBSD, and many others
•Captured network data can be browsed via a GUI, or via the TTY-mode TShark utility
•The most powerful display filters in the industry
•Rich VoIP analysis
•Read/write many different capture file formats: tcpdump (libpcap), Pcap NG, Catapult DCT2000, Cisco Secure IDS iplog, Microsoft Network Monitor, Network General Sniffer® (compressed and uncompressed), Sniffer® Pro, and NetXray®, Network Instruments Observer, NetScreen snoop, Novell LANalyzer, RADCOM WAN/LAN Analyzer, Shomiti/Finisar Surveyor, Tektronix K12xx, Visual Networks Visual UpTime, WildPackets EtherPeek/TokenPeek/AiroPeek, and many others
•Capture files compressed with gzip can be decompressed on the fly
•Live data can be read from Ethernet, IEEE 802.11, PPP/HDLC, ATM, Bluetooth, USB, Token Ring, Frame Relay, FDDI, and others (depending on your platform)
•Decryption support for many protocols, including IPsec, ISAKMP, Kerberos, SNMPv3, SSL/TLS, WEP, and WPA/WPA2
•Coloring rules can be applied to the packet list for quick, intuitive analysis

•Output can be exported to XML, PostScript®, CSV, or plain text

Tonmind Audio Mangement Software including Tonmind Audio Manager, Tonmind PA System Lite, Tonmind PA Pro also apply Wireshark during developing and debugging. Tonmind Audio Manager converts multi audio input to RTP Multicast. Tonmind PA System Lite and Tonmind PA System Pro converts multi audio input to SIP extension broadcasting and RTP Muliticast.  All of them can control zones, contents, rings, volume and scheduling.

Capturing SIP or RTP Traffic with Wireshark to Troubleshoot Network Problems.
Before Capturing Data
1. Make sure that the phone system is powered on and is configured on the same network that you will be capturing traffic on
2. Install and open Wireshark
3. Select the interface you wish to capture on (ie. Local Area Connection)
4. Click start.

5. You should see data packets being captured in the Wireshark capture window

Ensure that RTP and/or SIP Traffic is Being Captured.
1. Stop the capture and use the Filter to search for “rtp” and/or “sip” (lowercase only)
2. Type “rtp” in to the filter text box and click apply. Confirm that RTP traffic is being captured

3. Type “sip” in to the filter text box and click apply. Confirm that SIP traffic is being captured. (if applicable)

4. Close the capture (File -> Close)
5. Click “Continue without Saving”

Capturing the Data.

1. Start a new capture
2. Make test calls and perform whatever actions are necessary to reproduce the problem you’re having
3. Click the stop button after sufficient data has been captured

4. Save the capture (File -> Save As)

In conclusion, Wireshark plays an important role in developing and debugging Tonmind PA System products. Engineers use Wireshark to detect and analyze issues during testing and developing of Tonmind IP Speaker, SIP Paging Adapter, SIP PCB Board, Tonmind Audio Manager, Tonmind PA System Lite and Tonmind PA System Pro.
